Bush Will Urge End to Offshore Oil Drilling Ban (Update3)
Fla.'s Crist has new view of offshore drilling ban
Governor Backs Florida Drilling
Sadly, I worry more about Crist than Bush on this, mainly because he's going to be around for longer.

NPR also had a story that touched on this trend over the weekend.

ETA: Yeah, looks like it is. Voted.
(One of the small pockets of clear space at the con.)
That I knew a number of other people going to the con certainly made it more enjoyable. I got to chat with friends, we oogled comics (and all manner of comics related stuff), we marveled at the sardine-can atmosphere. That I knew the person responsible for the con (which I only discovered after having been told by
coldecho)was a little weird. But it did explain why the place was a clusterfuck as far as logistics. And i'm not saying this because I like to say mean things. There were many people at the con- way more than the place looked capable of holding. Having the check-in, ticket sales, and con entrance at the center of a t-intersection also does not help. Reducing foot traffic space by putting large booths for the local radio station, and a major local comic shop (along with four other booths in the area with the heaviest foot traffic) only makes things worse.
Anyways, enough crabbiness. Photos:

Sketch/autograph thing in progress.

Yes, I know how silly I look, and I don't care.
Totally forgot to bring a dvd for him to sign, but i'm kind of glad it worked out that way. I plan on framing the sketch/autograph, and possibly including the two photos with it when I find a nice frame- I can always cut the matting myself. May post it when it's done, if I remember.

(Not permanently, mind you, but he is here from the 21st to the 26th.)
He's asked to see as many of the group as he can, while he's here.

Hey there!
Long freakin' time no see, no hear, no nothing! My bad. No shit.
Anyway, as luck would have it, I'm being flown down the Fort Lauderdale for Memorial Day Weekend and am then driving an ailing friend to Providence, Rhode Island.
I'll only be in town from Wednesday May 21st to Memorial Day (26th). Laurence has all my time on Wednesday and Thursday, but I'd really love to see as many of the ol' gang as possible. Even if all we do is hang out and drink coffee. I don't care, I just want to see everyone again before I lose my mind (again).
Forward this to anyone you think would be interested in seeing me again as I've lost a lot of my email addys for folks thanks to Karl's dim-wittedness. Email me back on possible plans so I know when and where. I already know a lot has changed down there. So have I. Despite my brother's relentless asinine nature, I'm stronger than ever vocally and my performance chops have never been better or more embolden. Who needs him when I have friends who actually care. Regardless of distance.
See you soon. Very soon.

From the article:
Last year's survey commissioned by the Apiary Inspectors of America found losses of about 32 percent. As beekeepers travel with their hives this spring to pollinate crops around the country, it's clear the insects are buckling under the weight of new diseases, pesticide drift and old enemies like the parasitic varroa mite, said Dennis van Engelsdorp, president of the group. "For two years in a row, we've sustained a substantial loss," he said. "That's an astonishing number. Imagine if one out of every three cows, or one out of every three chickens, were dying. That would raise a lot of alarm."
I ask this because i'm going to Portsmouth for a wedding, and likely spending at least one full day in Boston (probably a day and a half) during the trip.

Because buying overpriced food outside of the home sucks, and because carrying around an assortment of odds and ends rubber maid/ tupperware/ what have you containers in a plastic bag ends up being unwieldy, at best- I will probably buy one of these over the weekend. Or, *failing* to find one at a local market this weekend, online.
Sadly, Amazon says 4-6 weeks till I can get one from them (which I would, because hey- I have a $25 gift certificate and it would be $18.33 with amazon prime free 2-day). As it is now, I have a stash of dry goods in the desk that do not need to be refrigerated, but they're only good for breakfast, or snacks.
The avocado and grapefruit trees we have been tending to are growing fast- they had a growth spurt after I transfered them to larger containers. Also doing well- the berry tree (gooseberry?) that looked to be on death's door (purchased on sale at Target). A bargain at $7, it's looking happy and healthy in it's pot now. The lettuce, beets, tomatoes and basil I planted one month ago are plugging along. I lost some after a week of particularly sunny, dry weather. Lost all the strawberry seedlings I planted at the same time. Will probably try to grow more again, as soon as I find the time to pick up more seeds. And dirt. Pictures of pot garden this weekend, because i've been meaning to.

Also- if you missed this weekend's episode of This American Life you missed a really good show- Episode 258: Leaving the Fold. When I hear an episode like this I wish the show was longer than an hour.

San Francisco State University is conducting a research project on urban bee colonies. They give you sunflower seeds for free. You in turn agree to grow those seeds and document how many bees come to visit. A full explanation can be found here. More people participating = better results. I have already sent away for my seeds.
What will the "death penalty" be? (Hythian)
Arkayne: The "death penalty" is fairly simple, Hythian. After a player is defeated, he or she can choose to wait until another nearby player with healilng powers puts them back in the fight. Failing that, the player can choose to go to a nearby recovery point. Those points are spread throughout zones and instance maps.
Regardless of what the player chooses to do, they have to pay a small price for defeat: upgrade degradation. Upgrades are pieces of equipment, imbuements, special training, etc., that players use to make their character more powerful. Every upgrade has a condition associated with it. Whenever a player is defeated any upgrades the player has slotted degrade. If the condition of an upgrade is reduced to 0, it stops providing a benefit. Upgrades can be restored to full effectiveness for a resource cost at most hero safe areas throughout the game. This represents items being repaired, re-exposure to experimental rays, combat technique montages, etc.
